OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mobile App Growth Shows Signs of Plateauing
Growth for OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app may have peaked, according to a new analysis by Apptopia. Since April, global downloads have slowed, and daily active user growth has leveled off. October is projected to see an 8.1% month-over-month decline in installs—though the app still garners millions of downloads daily.
User engagement is waning. In the U.S., average session time has dropped 22.5% since July, while sessions per user fell 20.7%. Despite this, churn rates have stabilized, suggesting the app retains its Core user base rather than losing casual adopters.
Competition may be a factor. Google’s Gemini AI tool gained traction in September with its Nano Banana image model, potentially diverting attention from ChatGPT. The AI landscape remains dynamic, with shifting user preferences influencing market leaders.
